Art: Puppet Theatre Workshop
Ages: Grades 1 and upTime: 3:00-3:55 PM
Cost: $45 ($4.50 per class)
Room: 8
In this workshop we will brainstorm together to come up with a puppet show and then make the puppets and make the backdrop, and put on the show! In the fall, the Calder class made a puppet show, inspired by Calder's circus that he put together in the 1920s in Paris with dressed up and outlandish wire circus animals and performers, and we had so much fun in that class that it seemed like it would be a great idea to gather up a troupe of creators and performers and put on another show. This troupe, in homeschool fashion, would really benefit from a wide range of ages. The troupe members can each bring their particular favorite ways to be creative to the troupe. The workshop will be a jovial collaboration of visual artists, writers, and performers, and I can hardly wait to work together with them.

The Venetian masks are unique and extraordinary works of art. A tradition dating back to the early Middle Ages, the masks of Venice are of two different types, those for the improvisational theater tradition of commedia dell'arte which represent certain comic stock characters, and those for the carnival. Some are delicate, fancy and elegant, and some are ridiculous in a way, with enormous beaks or topped by eccentric peaked jester hats. They are all playfully extravagant. In this class, students will learn about this old tradition and see images of many different Venetian masks. And then they will be able to design and construct their own mask, with a special paper mache technique and paint, fabric, ribbons, gems and feathers.
